This section offers
information about some of the new material which has been received in the
GCU Libraries. We receive new accessions regularly by gift, deposit and
purchase. Whilst we cannot advertise them all here; we will attempt to bring
the most important titles from the same.
The Acquisition Department situated in Science Hall at
Postgraduate Library is responsible for the largest proportion of the
Library’s purchases. The Division acquires about 4000 books every year,
excluding newspapers, magazines and periodicals, of which about 90% are the
result of selection by faculty members and library staff of the University
or come as part of standing orders. A reasonable proportion of of works
purchased arise from recommendations made by readers.
All purchasing is carried out within the guidelines laid
down within the GCU Collection Development Policy which offers detailed
information on the Library’s collecting policy by subject, language and
physical format.
Recommendations
Readers are encouraged to recommend works for purchase:
the preferred means is via the on-line recommendation form. There are also
printed recommendation forms available in various locations throughout the
Library.
Readers are not normally informed that the works they have
recommended have been approved, and they may assume that their
recommendations have been ordered unless they are notified to the contrary.
In fact, relatively few recommendations are rejected, largely on grounds of
expense or unsuitability.
Most works recommended by readers are acquired within a
few weeks. The Department normally orders from suppliers in the country of
publication, as this has been found to be more reliable, as well as offering
financial advantages. It does mean, however, that it may take longer to
acquire a book than the recommender expects. In addition, because of the
amount of material being received, it is inevitable that there is some delay
between receipt of parcels and the processing of the books. If readers wish
to enquire about the progress of a recommendation, they should normally ask
the Department, or contact the Senior Librarians.
Recommend a purchase
Suggestions for the purchase of books and other materials
should normally be made through Librarians or drop the suggestions in the
Boxes available in GCU Libraries.
The suggestion should include the following information:
Author or editor, title, publisher, date of
publication, format,
Price Priority: 1 (essential), 2.1 (highly
desirable), 2.2 (desirable) or 3 (relevant but of less importance)
Teaching staff should also provide details of the
numbers of students expected to use the item and some indication of the
timing of the initial demand.
Suggestions can be submitted by email to chieflibrarian@gcu.edu.pk.
Readers who wish to donate works to the University Library
may address them to Chief Librarian.
All donations are formally acknowledged. The University
Library reserves the right and discretion to accept or discard donations
which either duplicate existing holdings or fall outside its Collection
Development Policy. In view of the large number of donations received,
rejected donations are not returned to their donors, although efforts will
be made where possible to find a more suitable library within the University
where such donations can be accommodated.

In print for twenty-seven years, A
Map of Misreading serves as a companion volume to Bloom's other
seminal work, The Anxiety of Influence. In this finely
crafted text, Bloom offers instruction in how to read a poem, using
his theory that patterns of imagery in poems represent both a
response to and a defense against the influence of precursor poems.
Influence, as Bloom conceives it, means that there are no texts, but
only relationships between texts. Bloom discusses British and
American poets including Milton, Wordsworth, Shelley, Keats,
Tennyson, Browning, Whitman, Dickinson, Stevens, Warren, Ammons and
Ashbery. A full-scale reading of one poem, Browning's "Childe Roland
to the Dark Tower Came," represents this struggle between one poet
and his precursors, the poem serving as a map for readers through
the many versions of influence from Milton to modern poets.
For the first time, in a new preface, Bloom will consider the map of
misreading drawn by contemporary poets such as Ann Carson and Henri
Cole. Bloom's new exploration of contemporary poetry over the last
twenty years will illuminate how modern texts relate to previous
texts, and contribute to the literary legacy of their predecessors.
Title: Developing web application 2nd Ed.
Author: Ralph Moseley
Building applications for the Internet is a complex
and fast-moving field which utilizes a variety of continually
evolving technologies. Whether your perspective is from the client
or server side, there are many languages to master - X(HTML),
JavaScript, PHP, XML and CSS to name but a few. These languages have
to work together cleanly, logically and in harmony with the systems
they run on, and be compatible with any browsers with which they
interact. Developing Web Applications presents script writing and
good programming practice but also allows students to see how the
individual technologies fit together. It includes recent technical
developments to provide a practical and modern introduction to
building web applications. Assuming no prior programming experience,
this concise, accessible book ensures that essential concepts on the
client side are quickly grasped, and goes on to examine the server
environment and available languages, including discussion of
dynamic, modern scripting languages such as PHP. Network and
security issues are also discussed. The aim of this book is to
deliver exactly what is needed to start producing working
applications as soon as possible - and have fun along the way. Ideal
for course use or self-study, this book includes practical
suggestions for mini-projects which encourage the reader to explore
his or her own imaginative solutions, as well as more theoretical
end-of-chapter questions. It can also easily be used as a reference
work as each section is self-contained, amplifying the key aspects
of its particular topic. Most software covered is freely available
in the public domain and no particular development environments are
required. It is a direct, contemporary and extremely useful resource
for anyone interested in learning how to program applications for
the World Wide Web.
Title: Routes:
travel and translation in the late twentieth
century
Author: James
Clifford
When culture makes itself at home in motion,
where does an anthropologist stand? In a
follow-up toThe Predicament of Culture, one
of the defining books for anthropology in
the last decade, James Clifford takes the
proper measure: a moving picture of a world
that doesn't stand still, that reveals
itself en route, in the airport lounge and
the parking lot as much as in the
marketplace and the museum.
In this collage of essays, meditations,
poems, and travel reports, Clifford takes
travel and its difficult companion,
translation, as openings into a complex
modernity. He contemplates a world ever more
connected yet not homogeneous, a global
history proceeding from the fraught legacies
of exploration, colonization, capitalist
expansion, immigration, labor mobility, and
tourism. Ranging from Highland New Guinea to
northern California, from Vancouver to
London, he probes current approaches to the
interpretation and display of non-Western
arts and cultures. Wherever people and
things cross paths and where institutional
forces work to discipline unruly encounters,
Clifford's concern is with struggles to
displace stereotypes, to recognize divergent
histories, to sustain "postcolonial" and
"tribal" identities in contexts of
domination and globalization.
Travel, diaspora, border crossing,
self-location, the making of homes away from
home: these are transcultural predicaments
for the late twentieth century. The map that
might account for them, the history of an
entangled modernity, emerges here as an
unfinished series of paths and negotiations,
leading in many directions while returning
again and again to the struggles and arts of
cultural encounter, the impossible,
inescapable tasks of translation.
Title: The anatomy of influence:
literature as a way of life
Author: Harold Bloom
'Literary criticism, as I attempt to
practice it', writes Harold Bloom in "The
Anatomy of Influence", 'is in the first
place literary, that is to say, personal and
passionate'. For more than half a century,
Bloom has shared his profound knowledge of
the written word with students and readers.
In this, his most comprehensive and
accessible study of influence, Bloom leads
us through the labyrinthine paths which link
the writers and critics who have informed
and inspired him for so many years. The
result is "a critical self-portrait", a
sustained meditation on a life lived with
and through the great works of the Western
canon: Why has influence been my lifelong
obsessive concern? Why have certain writers
found me and not others? What is the end of
a literary life? Featuring extended analyses
of Bloom's most cherished poets -
Shakespeare, Whitman, and Crane - as well as
inspired appreciations of Emerson, Tennyson,
Browning, Yeats, Ashbery, and others, "The
Anatomy of Influence" adapts Bloom's classic
work "The Anxiety of Influence" to show us
what great literature is, how it comes to
be, and why it matters. Each chapter maps
startling new literary connections that
suddenly seem inevitable once Bloom has
shown us how to listen and to read. A fierce
and intimate appreciation of the art of
literature on a scale that the author will
not again attempt, "The Anatomy of
Influence" follows the sublime works it
studies, inspiring the reader with a sense
of something ever more about to be.
